Our People

GAF Community Matters

GAF Community Matters, our social impact initiative, helps improve resilience in communities across the country. As part of this effort, we bring our resources, expertise and products to vulnerable areas to support the fundamentals of building resilient communities: Shelter, Families, and Workforces. Our work has led to 3,000+ repaired roofs; hundreds of people trained and educated in roofing, opening doors to new career pathways; and support for local non-profit partners providing critical resources and tools for when disasters strike, and leading initiatives designed to bring people together in shared spaces that help enhance economic and social health. In 2022, we expanded this work in a big way. Read more about the work.

We believe resilience is the foundation of thriving, sustainable communities of the future. We are committing $25M through 2025 to expand our work.

Expanding Our Impact

For too long disaster response has prioritized short term support over long term resilience. The impact of extreme weather on communities lingers beyond the initial storm and can even worsen, perpetuating economic and social hardships that make recovery for families seem near impossible. Immediate response efforts are often temporary and when those resources leave, GAF Community Matters steps in. To promote more resilient building practices and raise awareness of the long-term support needed following extreme weather, we announced a $25 million commitment through 2025 to help build more resilient communities across the country.

We are also in the process of training community members in essential roofing skills through GAF Roofing Academy and are working to replace 500 roofs in the Gulf Region, including 150 in the 7th Ward of New Orleans, an area that’s become synonymous with natural disasters. We assembled a team to work with us on this effort that included acclaimed actor and New Orleans native Anthony Mackie. The son of a roofer, Mackie knows first-hand the importance of having a solid roof over your head and the need for support long after extreme weather hits. Together, we are helping to build resilient communities, workforces and families, so they are better able to withstand future events.

Shafter: Revitalizing a Community

GAF believes that shared public spaces play an important role in bringing people together and helping enhance the economic and social health of places where we live and work for years to come. In spring 2022, GAF worked with the city of Shafter in California to renovate and reopen the Shafter Learning Center, an integral resource to all members of the community. The additional space will ensure that the Library & Learning Center is able to meet the community's needs today and into the future. After almost two years of being closed due to the pandemic, residents were finally able to enjoy the new facilities and beautified outdoor space. Learn more about this project.

Partners in Progress

Our work is only possible with many partners through North America. Thanks to our signature nonprofit teams that make our impact possible.

Since 2017, our partnership has continued to grow as GAF has, time and time again, proven itself to be a reliable partner. Starting with financial support, GAF supported our efforts in responding to that year's devastating string of hurricanes. Since then, they've donated shingles, warehouse space, and volunteers who have assembled hygiene kits, clean-up buckets, and blankets. On top of that, they've provided thought leadership and expertise on our Disaster Recovery Council, allowing us to get even better at ensuring we get the right goods to the right people at the right time through all stages of recovery. The transformational work we do wouldn't be possible without partners like GAF.

Our ideals align with GAF and together, we’re building communities back stronger than they were before. With SBP’s roots in New Orleans, GAF has been integral in bringing families home to stable lives with roofs over their heads. GAF’s support in building IBHS fortified roofs means that when the next storm comes, there will be stronger roofs and more resilient families, thanks to GAF.

GAF's commitment to make sure that Homeowners have a safe place to go to bed and have a dry roof is where it starts for our organization—bringing roofs to homeowners that are unfortunately inaccessible to so many. GAF committed early, but what's unique is that they're committing a year after the storm to do more roofs. They’re committed to making this entire neighborhood resilient – working with GAF is having a partner that says we understand exactly what you’re doing and providing us with the most resilient and environmentally-friendly products on the market.

The Rise of Women Roofers

While the number of women in construction trades is reaching new heights, still only 3% of roofers are women, but GAF Roofing Academy is working to help change that. Currently, 13% of participants in the free, national training course are women and recently GAF held two all-women trainings led by Kimberly Santiago-Vega – a GAF Roofing Academy trainer and former student. Her journey and the stories of her students in Denver were showcased on the Tamron Hall Show. Watch the clip featuring Kimberly here.

Roofing is opening doors to a world of career opportunities.

The roofing systems are so interesting to me – I learned that there is more to it than just routines, it’s specific skills. It fulfilled my curiosity and I wanted to learn more!
