Inclusion & Diversity

Building inclusive and diverse communities and workplaces is part of creating a more sustainable world.

Life at GAF

Sustainability is as much about people as it is about the planet, which is why GAF is committed to enhancing the lives of our employees, contractors, customers, and members of the communities where we operate – now and in the future.

OUR PEOPLE

GAF Community Matters

GAF Community Matters launched in 2020 to deliver on our purpose “to protect what matters” and make a positive difference as neighbors and partners in the communities where we live and work.

Life at GAF

GAF is committed to enhancing the lives of our employees, contractors, customers, and members of the communities where we operate – now and in the future, because sustainability is as much about people as it is about the planet.

Building a Culture of Engagement

At GAF, we invest in resources and opportunities that will help our people thrive personally and professionally. We are committed to helping them build meaningful career paths and strive to be an employer of choice in the communities we serve by creating programs for our frontline team members to collaborate, share best practices and develop insights on how to make our business work better. We seek to empower and engage our frontline operators in the identification and consistent resolution of issues and idea generation across our manufacturing plants.

2022 Highlights:

A Safe and Healthy Work Environment

At GAF, we want to finish each day with zero injuries and maintain high quality work environments for our employees. We consider the health and safety of our employees and the environments in which they work a top priority. In 2022, we achieved exceptional safety performance. Our 2022 health and safety upgrades include:

Completed installation of a regenerative thermal oxidizer system in Minnesota plant that improved environmental emissions and the fume collection ductwork and hoods at the process end Installation of a new Airclear fiber bed fume collector to improve fume collection efficiency on the process end in our Myerstown shingle plant Installed a completely new dust collection system including collector, ductwork and hoods in Stockton plant

We continuously improve safety and communications processes and invest in major capital projects with a focus on digitalization. In the last year, we have updated safety control technology for machinery and processes and taken additional steps to decrease risk of falls and improved material handling. We have also installed updated exhaust ventilation and vacuum systems.

Our Benefits

GAF offers a comprehensive and competitive benefit package aimed at attracting and retaining top talent and ensuring employee engagement and well-being. As part of our core benefits package, this year we also introduced fertility and family building benefits. We know the journey to starting a family is not the same for everyone, so we’re proud to offer benefits around fertility treatment services and reimbursement options for eligible adoption, donor, or surrogacy expenses. These benefits also include coaching sessions that cover a wide range of topics such as mental well-being, nutrition, back-to-work care and more.

Employee Giving Hub: Where Community Matters

We also support our employees who volunteer their skills and expertise with the goal of making a positive impact in their own communities. Our workplace donor and volunteer program includes two paid days (16 hours) a year for employees to volunteer for nonprofit organizations in their communities. Through our Employee Giving Hub, we offer team volunteer opportunities and highlight community organizations in need of support.

Additionally, GAF provides up to $2,500 in matching gifts for each employee's contributions to nonprofit organizations they care about in their communities. In 2022, GAF and our employees supported and volunteered with 170 organizations for a total of nearly 10,000 hours, an increase in volunteerism by 45%.

When it comes to supporting communities, Sara has always been passionate about bringing fresh water into areas that do not have it.

Being able to support local families and work with an organization that provides basic living needs like shelter is what Todd is passionate about. He loves volunteering his time with his local Habitat for Humanity and working with his team making positive impacts together.

Jon was able to combine his love for kayak fishing and helping others by volunteering with Heroes on Water, which provides therapeutic kayak experiences to military veterans and first responders.

Doug has always enjoyed giving back to his community and has learned a lot from his volunteer experiences. Doug enjoys cooking and building, and found opportunities to give back using those skills.

Kevin is a volunteer firefighter in his community. After watching his dad give back to their local fire department, he was inspired to do the same. Now Kevin shares this experience with his son, and gets to visit schools to educate the youth on fire safety.

Jeff was inspired by family and the healthcare community to help others which led him to volunteer with Team Rubicon, helping with their disaster relief operations.

Taking Care of Our Employees and Communities

We recognize that giving back is about more than volunteering time. The GAF Cares Employee Relief Fund offers much-needed support for employees who face unexpected financial hardship due to a natural disaster or serious injury or illness. Thanks to donations from employees and from GAF, this fund provides tax-free grants to eligible US-based employees.

Finding Relief After Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian was the deadliest storm to strike Florida in nearly 100 years and left a trail of devastation across the state. GAF made initial preparations to support employees and their families in Tampa, but when it was clear they would be spared the worst, a group of GAF employees pivoted and directed resources to other communities. In a closely coordinated effort, they identified areas for rapid deployment of life-saving resources to people in need. Now, the team is focused on the future and exploring ways they can build additional efficiencies so when the next storm hits, they can help even more communities. Learn more about this important effort.

If it wasn't for other people stepping up, and other people taking on roles they don't normally take, this never would have happened. It happens with a team. That's the only way this happened. The teamwork allows us to help the people who really need it.
