The last few years have been a rollercoaster for workers in the U.S. The country saw its greatest job loss since the Great Depression and almost a year later faced the challenge of not having enough workers to fill job openings. It's an experience experts say has changed the American workforce and workers.

As a result, 45% of employers are shifting their hiring practices and focusing more on skills and competencies versus degrees. So what jobs can help build the right kind of skills that will open more doors? Try roofing.

Whether the interest is in finding a side hustle, a fresh start, or learning about different career paths, roofing helps build skills that translate across industries and sectors— from building and construction to manufacturing, human resources, sales, and more.

From Side Hustle to Business Owner

Erasmo "Mitos" Fuentes started his career as a teacher and got into roofing as a way to bring in extra money—but after his first day on a roof, he knew he could grow it into a full-time job. He made his way up from roofer to business owner and now works for the largest roofing manufacturer in North America.

It all started when Fuentes was purchasing roofing materials and met a representative from roofing and waterproofing manufacturer GAF, whose expertise helped open new doors. "He explained the differences between shingles without dismissing any other brands or promoting GAF; he was just there to help me," said Fuentes, who found a mentor in his fellow roofing professional as he built his business.

Passionate about sharing his knowledge with others, Fuentes later became a trainer at GAF's Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence (CARE) where he teaches courses in Spanish to roofing contractors. He and other industry experts guide more than 364,000 professionals across North America, teaching them everything in roofing—from installation to sales techniques. The courses are provided in both English and Spanish and range from live, hands-on training in centers across the country, in locations such as Minneapolis, MN; Michigan City, IN; Dallas, TX; Parsippany, NJ, and more, to virtual seminars that cover the industry's best practices and trends.

Today, Fuentes is referred to by his peers as The Maestro because of the way he's helped and impacted others through roofing. A teacher, roofer, business owner, and GAF CARE trainer, he represents the roofing community's passion for lifting others up.

No Formal Education? No Problem, in Roofing It's All about the Training!

Roofers are among the construction industry's unsung heroes—they help families and communities protect what matters most, starting with the roof over their head. There's a need for skilled roofers and demand for 19,000 new jobs is expected by 2028.

Roofing is a profession with few barriers—no degree or schooling required and national programs like GAF Roofing Academy help people of all backgrounds get into the field. Roofing Academy started three years ago and today includes a free two-week training course that combines classroom and on-the-roof training, led by expert instructors that prepare students for an entry-level position. After completing the program, graduates have access to job opportunities from thousands of GAF-certified contractors nationwide.

To date, GAF Roofing Academy has trained over 2,000 graduates and, in 2022, 57% of its students were placed in jobs across the country. Training goes beyond installation and includes skills for roles such as solar installer, sales, estimator, foreman, project manager, and more. More than 20 trainings are expected to take place across the country in 2023 from Baltimore, MD to New Orleans, LA to Kansas City, MO, and beyond.

Apprenticeships and training programs like these are also critical to diversifying the workforce and increasing earnings. More than a third of 2022 GAF Roofing Academy students were at-risk, justice-involved, or transitioning military. More than 60% were Black or Hispanic and nearly 15% identify as female.

Roofing Teaches You Skills in Construction—and Beyond

The roofing industry opens the door to multiple career paths—some don't even require you to get up on a roof every day. Kelvin Thomas, for example, has had a 44-year career in roofing operations and held 16 different positions that helped expose him to opportunities in manufacturing, maintenance, quality, supply chain, and human resources in multiple cities.

His first "real paying" job was in his hometown of Tuscaloosa, AL, starting on the clean-up crew at a GAF manufacturing facility. Over the course of his 44 years with GAF, Kelvin explored careers at GAF and held roles that ranged from a Lab Tech, a Regional Manager of Warehouse Operation, to a Sr. Director of Distribution. Today, Kelvin holds the position of Vice President of Operations Culture and Employee Engagement. This leadership role has brought his career full circle, giving him the opportunity to shape the culture and develop the future for frontline manufacturing professionals—the exact place his career started. Being a leader for the next generation of frontline employees allows him to share the valuable lessons he's learned in his roofing career, while driving continuous improvement in roofing operations and beyond.

"Sometimes our qualifications don't check all the boxes, but if you keep trying and have faith in yourself, someone will be willing to take a chance on you," explains Thomas.

Roofing is an often overlooked opportunity for anyone interested in starting a career with endless opportunities for professional and personal growth. Making Connections at the 2024 GAF Latinos In Roofing Summit

For the past several years, GAF has hosted the Latinos In Roofing Summit & Expo to acknowledge, celebrate, and empower Latino roofing contractors and installers. The event provides networking opportunities, education, and training—presented entirely in Spanish—in a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere.Now in its third year, the summit has become a trusted resource for the Spanish-speaking contractor community to gain insights into how to better run and grow their roofing businesses. Educational sessions cover topics essential for business success, such as sales, insurance restoration work, commercial roofing, leadership, marketing, and roofing products.The first Latinos In Roofing Expo of 2024 was held on June 22nd in Los Angeles, and hundreds of industry professionals attended. With an emphasis on fostering community, the event featured a range of activities, including a pre-reception networking session and the chance to attend an LA Dodgers game with their new connections.Here's a look at what the event offered attendees and the experiences they shared.Breaking through Language BarriersAlan Lopez, GAF CARE trainer, explains that Latinos In Roofing events were developed when he noticed more Hispanic contractors attending GAF events conducted in English. For many of them, English was a second language, so it was harder to learn and take in all the information, some of which was lost in translation. Lopez reached out to his leadership at GAF, and they were eager to offer resources for Latino contractors, hosting the first expo in 2019.Abad Sarate, CEO of Asa Pro Roofing in Seattle, Washington, credits the conference being conducted entirely in Spanish as critical to successfully learning and understanding the information presented. "For us, it is very important to understand it in our main language, it is essential," he says. "And to have this type of conference for many Latino contractors fills us with pride." He continues, "I see more and more Latinos owning roofing companies, and the truth is that I am very happy—it makes me very proud as a Latino too."Luis Velasquez from Entrenando Latinos In Roofing agrees that the summit presented in Spanish was important to attendees' success. "We Latinos, who are first generation, who did not go through school, who come from poor countries, have a conflict and that is that we do not understand 100% English, we are not fully bilingual," he said. "So, when we manage to understand what is going on and how we can put it into practice, it is a complete gain. When we put knowledge in our head, the head will put money in our pockets."Creating an Annual Tradition for Roofing ProfessionalsGaining knowledge for business success was a key theme at this year's event. The informational sessions, keynote lectures, and demonstrations enabled attendees to learn about new products and gain new skills while connecting with other Latinos in the roofing industry. Many attendees were repeat visitors, demonstrating the value the event provides.Sarate is a two-time attendee and explains that the annual gathering has been instrumental in his company's development. "It has been an exceptional part of our growth because of all the knowledge that we take away from here," he shares. "We come back with much more knowledge. And in the end, knowledge is power... We put that knowledge back into the company, and it has benefited us a lot."Marcos Sierra from Sierra Group Roofing & Solar returned to the expo for a third time because of the networking opportunities and education. "The reason I come back is, one, to see my colleagues from other parts of the United States. Two, every time I come, I learn something new. And three, to refine, refine, refine. [So we can] grow our business," he said.Supporting Contractors beyond the Roofing Summit & ExpoThe Latinos In Roofing initiative started at GAF to create resources and a community for Spanish-speaking contractors and installers. Since establishing the initiative in 2017, the company has seen more and more members of the Hispanic community thrive.Contractors who attend the Latinos In Roofing Summit & Expo are granted access to GAF business tools, which they can use to raise their profit margins and reduce risks. They can also work toward becoming certified with GAF and joining the elite certified contractor program. How GAF Contributed to Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Efforts

Several years after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico in 2017 and caused around $90 billion in damage, residents were still working to repair their homes and rebuild their communities. Subsequent storms further damaged unfixed properties and the power grid continued to suffer frequent blackouts. As a result, many families were living in unsafe conditions.In response, GAF, through our Community Matters initiative partnered with Team Rubicon and local nongovernmental organizations to provide Puerto Rico hurricane relief. GAF donated roofing materials, roof installation trainings, and hundreds of hours of volunteer labor toward the Puerto Rico hurricane relief effort. Since 2017, GAF has continued its commitment and has donated materials for over 500 roofs and helped install them all over Puerto Rico.Video TranscriptEnglish Translation: The storm came and took my home. [00:00:07]A lot of the homeowners either are financially short or just don't have the capabilities to do it themselves. We're able to provide the work and the labor for them and just help them out however we can.[00:00:21]It's really important to us that we are always putting the highest quality materials into these homes.Yesterday, we were at el Barrio Consejo en Guayanilla, and we were teaching ProTechos, Team Rubicon, and members of the local community how to apply GAF roof coatings. After we finished our coatings portion, we actually did a Liberty rolled roofing. We predominantly do commercial, but all throughout the years, we've done residential. That's why we're here today at this event. We're trying to get updated on the new stuff that's coming out, specifically from GAF. Innovative ideas, new products, new software, new tech. So follow me along today as we explore the GAF summit.[00:00:45]Today, we're going into the principles of ventilation. Designs change, architecture changes, and you need new ways of ventilating. And I don't know all of them. So I want to get some info and see what GAF has to offer as far as new products and new thoughts on how to move the air around. So we just got out of our first breakout session about ventilation. A lot of math, a lot of numbers going into the calculations of moving air around in your attic space to have a really good performed roof system. I didn't know all those details. Now I know, got to use it going forward from there.[00:01:19]I just got out of the AI CRM breakout session there. A little bit of an information overload, and that was a good thing because it really showed me how much I was missing the CRM and AI, it's the future. It's coming.[00:01:37]So I just got out of the third and final breakout of today's GAF Summit, and it was about sales, and it was very interesting to see the different dynamics that take place in the residential market when you're dealing with a homeowner versus something commercial, where oftentimes you don't even get to see who you're selling to. So to find out those little intricacies inside that process was super insightful. The best part of today was everything.
