When you dream big, you can achieve anything. But it certainly makes things easier when you have a helping hand from the industry you aspire to succeed in.
The journey towards a career in the roofing business begins for those who enroll in the GAF Roofing Academy, a hands-on training program that prepares individuals to pursue an entry-level roofing position in commercial or residential roofing, including solar.
Giving New Roofers a Leg Up
Participants in GAF's Roofing Academy receive practical training that will prepare them to start a career in the roofing industry. GAF trainers share real-world industry experience with their students, along with the latest technology and tools required to excel on the job.
Juell, a student at one of GAF's Roofing Academy locations, says the training offers a great experience in a supportive environment.
"It's amazing! I've learned so much that I feel I could go out there and start my own business," says Juell. "Roofing will most likely become my primary career path because I like the idea of fixing homes and giving people a place to stay. And it's nice to work with your hands and know that you've finished something."
Another student, Ricky, appreciates the encouragement and networking opportunities he gets from GAF Roofing Academy staff and sees great things for the industry in the years to come.
"Roofing is such an innovative business. It's growing rapidly, and I want to be part of the change," says Ricky. "GAF Roofing Academy has given me ten times more inspiration and lets me know that all the hard work that I'm putting in will pay off. I'm so grateful to be here. Roofing is definitely my future."
GAF Roofing Academy also prepares participants to aim high, reach their full potential and make their dreams a reality, Juell adds.
"Hopefully in 10 years, I'll own my own company. Roofing is definitely a beautiful calling," she says.
Aspirations such as these are achievable, according to Justin Shirley, the Operations Manager for Achten's Quality Roofing in Tacoma, WA. "I'm proud to be in the roofing industry. It taught me that with hard work and a good work ethic, anything is possible. You don't always have to be tearing out shingles. Someday, you could be managing or owning your own business."
A Fresh Start After Serving the Country
A career in roofing can be an ideal next step for veterans seeking roles that leverage skills developed while serving in the military. Josh Nancarrow, Operations Manager for TriState Roofing in Seattle, says he's worked with many veterans who were still active in or freshly out of the armed forces, all looking for their next opportunity. It can be challenging to switch gears after serving your country, so Nancarrow believes the right training is key.
"I've been there," he explains. "I was a Marine myself and didn't know what to do. I had no real schooling, I barely graduated, so I know what they're going through. It's nice to give them an opportunity."
These entry-level roles can serve as a springboard into a range of exciting opportunities, from labor, operations and project management, to sales, other administrative roles, or even manufacturing, R&D, and all across the supply chain.
