Frequently asked questions
Roofing overburden can be any manner of material, equipment or installation (not including thermal insulation) situated on top of — and covering all or a portion of — a roof or waterproofing membrane assembly. This may include either aesthetic or functional features including planters, a wide variety of vegetative roof assemblies, loose gravel, water tanks, void fill (e.g. EPS, XPS, and/or Polyiso rigid foam), tiles, pavers, supporting pedestals, equipment, and solar PV arrays.
In order to qualify for GAF guarantees, overburden assemblies generally include GAF EnergyGuard™ Polyiso Insulation and adhered coverboard, and either EverGuard® single-ply (TPO or PVC) membrane OR Ruberoid® asphaltic membrane. Please consult with your GAF Territory Manager for specific assembly requirements.
Every roofing overburden assembly — like every roof — will be unique, but depending upon the project, overburden that includes vegetative assemblies, water catchment, solar arrays, and other green, energy, and amenity features can help designers and building owners achieve their sustainable building goals.
