GAF commercial roof materials used on Stanley Center

Designing a LBC roof system

The Stanley Center is a private foundation with projects that range from tackling climate change to mass violence and atrocity prevention. They put their values into the buildings design by rising to the Living Building Challenge. GAF brought the expertise, products (1/2" EnergyGuard NH HD Polyiso Cover Board and 2" EnergyGuard NH Polyiso Insulation) and resources to help make it happen. When complete, the center will be one of the most sustainable buildings in the world, 1 of only 31 to meet accreditation of the LBC.

The Living Building Challenge

The goal of the Living Building Challenge is to create buildings that generate more energy than they use, capture and treat all water on site, and use healthy materials. It’s the world’s most ambitious, advanced, and holistic performance standard for green, resilient, and healthy buildings. Learn more about the LBC.

Frequently asked questions

EnergyGuard™ NH products have the same performance attributes, code and compliance approvals, and physical properties as EnergyGuard™ products but are manufactured without TCPP, incorporating a non-halogenated Flame retardant instead.
Non-halogenated polyisocyanurate is made with catalysts, polyols, flame retardants, MDI, and EPA-compliant blowing agents that contain no CFCs or HCFS, and therefore have no ozone depletion potential (ODP) and negligible global warming potential (GWP).
Like all polyiso, EnergyGuard™ NH polyiso provides a higher R-value per inch compared to non-polyiso types of insulation of equivalent thickness, making it one of the best thermal solutions for your roof. EnergyGuard™ NH (Non-Halogenated) Polyiso is TCPP-free and does not contain potentially hazardous flame-retardant chemicals, qualifying it for sustainable certifications such as DECLARE, LEED, GreenGuard, and GreenCircle.
Other attributes include:
  • Versatility — Approved component in single-ply, BUR, and modified bitumen systems, with a variety of attachment methods: mechanically attached, fully adhered, loose laid, and ballasted
  • Ease of installation — Because of its lightweight, polyiso is easy to handle on the job site and installs quickly. Easy cutting in the field provides the installer with simplified fabricating on the roof deck
  • Standards/Approvals — FM approved (Refer to RoofNav.com for specific assemblies), UL classified (Classified by UL in accordance with ANSI/UL 790. Refer to UL Product iQ for specific assemblies.), Miami-Dade, and FBC*

* NOTE: Not all plants have all approvals. See individual data sheets for complete details.
EnergyGuard™ NH products can achieve an ANSI/UL 790 Class A and rating when used in certain assemblies. Refer to UL Product for specific assemblies. EnergyGuard™ NH Barrier Product achieves an ANSI/UL 790 UL Class A fire rating over a combustible deck with a 1/2" board thickness.
GAF EnergyGuard™ polyiso R-value is the same per board whether standard polyiso or NH. See the R-value chart on our EnergyGuard Polyiso Data Sheet.
GAF EnergyGuard™ NH flat and tapered products achieve the same aged R-Value when tested according to ASTM C 1289 standard using the ASTM C518 test method at both a mean temp of 40°F and 75°F — therefore reporting equivalent R-Value performance at both mean temperatures.
